Cézanne the Cowboy?
Learn how this famed artist influenced a generation of American Western artists

Here at Scoop Factory, we’re certainly no experts on French Post-Impressionist painting. However, we know a cool art exhibit when we see one, and we were blown away by the Phoenix Art Museum’s new Paul Cézanne retrospective. Entitled “Cézanne, Modern Art and the American West” this comprehensive collection illustrates why this famed artist is considered the ‘father of modern art.’ In short, he pioneered techniques such as the use of flattened perspective (think Pablo Picasso), carefully structured compositions and signature patches of color. Besides, anyone who gets name-checked in the classic Woody Allen flick, “Manhattan,” is good enough for us.
Learn more tonight at 7 pm with a free lecture hosted by Jerry Smith, curator of American and Western American art and contributor to the catalogue Cézanne and American Modernism. He’ll discuss highlights from the exhibition, including how artists working in the Western United States adapted Cézanne’s groundbreaking approach to painting. Cézanne and American Modernism reveals how a small group of pioneering American artists championed the reclusive French artist as he gained international prominence in the years shortly after his death. Trust us, you’ll feel smarter just for attending.
