LivingWell: Life in the Weil

andrewwiel1

Introducing Desert Living Today’s new column, LivingWell, bringing you tips, tricks and expert interviews on living a healthy lifestyle. This week, our sister site DLT chats with Arizona-resident and integrative medicine expert, Dr. Andrew Weil, about living in Arizona, his favorite splurge and his upcoming speaking appearance at the Celebrate Your Life Conference on November 4 - 7 in Scottsdale.

DLT: Dr. Weil, we have heard you live in Arizona is that so?
AW: I’m [actually] in Tucson. My car broke down here in 1973. It was an English LandRover and took 6 weeks to get fixed. It was a warm, wet February, and the desert was in full bloom. I fell in love with the place and never left.

What do you eat every day for optimal health and wellness? A variety of fresh vegetables from my garden if possible. Plus a few bites of plain, dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa).

It’s National Breast Cancer Awareness month, what advice would you give women on breast health? Know your risks, based on personal and family history. Eat whole soy foods regularly and introduce these early in life to female children. Eat only hormone-free beef and dairy products.

What will you be speaking about at this year’s Celebrate Your Life Conference in November?
Healthy Aging as well as about depression and happiness, the subjects of my new book, Spontaneous Happiness, being published on November 8th.

Do you ever splurge on anything? If so, what?
