Silly, Frilly and Mint Julepy—its Kentucky Derby time

hat1

Grab a mint julep and dust off your floppiest, frilliest hat because it’s Kentucky Derby time. Yes, the 136th annual Race for the Roses is this Saturday, and Bourbon Steak at the Fairmont Scottsdale is celebrating with a posh party. Held between 1  4 pm, the Millionaires Row Kentucky Derby Lawn Party is a food- and fashion-filled affair featuring live blues music, bourbon tastings and a horseshoe toss. (Of course, you might not want to combine the last two.)

Meanwhile, there will be plenty of traditional Southern food on hand, including chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits and Kentucky hot browns (open-faced turkey sandwiches smothered in gravy)—all paired with frosty mint juleps and “seersucker” cocktails. Finally, since the Derby is as much about the fashions as the actual race, guests are encouraged to compete in the Chapeau contest, where a “mystery” judge will be awarding prizes to the classiest and most stylish hats. $65 per person. 7575 E. Princess Dr., 480.513.6002

For something a little less, um, buttoned up, you might want to head over to Axis/Radius in downtown Scottsdale. Tonight only, the ”World’s Sexiest DJ,” aka former Playboy Playmate, Colleen Shannon will be holding down the wheels of steel. 7340 E. Indian Plaza, 480-970-1112
