‘Scoopies’ Awards—Style Edition
A snapshot of the Valley’s finest fashions of 2009

Looking back on the past 365 days, it hasn’t all been wine and roses. From bad fashion trends (MC Hammer pants are back, really?) to that darned economy, there are plenty of reasons to flip that calendar tout de suite. At Scoop Factory, however, 2009 was hands-down our best year ever! Granted it was our only year ever, but still, it’s time to hand out some Scoopies.
If we had to sum up 2009’s best new style development in three words it would be Barneys New York, as in the famed Manhattan fashion mecca finally deeming Scottsdale Barneys-worthy. Housed inside Scottsdale Fashion Square’s posh new wing, this soaring 65,000 square-foot space is part high-fashion art gallery, part we’re-so-hip-we-don’t-have-to-take-ourselves-seriously silliness. (What other grand opening could combine complimentary Champagne and doughnuts?) However, local fashionistas best know Barneys as the home to famed French parfumeur, Frederic Malle’s sealed smelling booths and a 5,000 square-foot shoe salon, featuring enough sky-high, lace-trimmed Christian Louboutin pumps to keep your podiatrist busy until 2011.
If we had to sum up the Valley’s second style highlight in three words, it would be Hennes & Mauritz. Better known as H&M, this Scandinavian style house featuring avant-garde knock-offs at rock-bottom prices finally got around to Arizona after opening some 178 stores across the US. Not that we’re bitter. So was it worth the wait? While some groused about the limited offerings—Jimmy Choo, where are you?—and seeing everybody in their office wearing the same jacket, at least we’re only two locations behind Wisconsin now.
