Weekend Guide

Urban cowboys, glam rock and monster trucks—the 80s really are back

We’ve got something for everyone this weekend. Provided you like trendy honky-tonks, car crushing spectacles and arena rock performed by symphony orchestras, that is. We’ll kick it off at Revolver Lounge, a sleek saloon opening tonight in the heart of downtown Scottsdale. Occupying the former SIX Lounge space, this highly anticipated hipster hangout features a hot ‘n’ dusty Western-themed décor, including rough-cut wooden plank walls and faux alligator skin lining the main bar. (7316 E. Stetson Dr.,480-946-2005)

Also on Friday, it’s Bach meets rock as The Phoenix Symphony Orchestra performs “The Music of Led Zeppelin” and “The Music of Queen.” Held at the Dodge Theatre, the show will also feature a live rock band and vocalists. No word on whether the singers will be rocking moustaches and vacuuming around the stage in high heels and leather miniskirts. We miss you Freddy. Greatest Rock Star Ever! (400 W. Washington St., 602-379-2800)

Finally, grab the kids and get ready to watch precious fossil fuels burned with reckless abandon at Monster Jam. Starring Grave Digger, Donkey Kong and McGruff the Crime Dog (the truck not the animated anti-crime pitchman), get there early for the Pit Party from 3 – 6 pm to meet the drivers and get up close and personal with these monstrous car-mashing machines. And remember, they’ll sell you the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge! (401 E. Jefferson St., 602-462-6000)
